Technologies of Recycling REEs and Iron from NdFeB Scrap

In recent years, under the background of global low-carbon development, production NdFeB magnets has increased dramatically. With end magnet life, a large number discarded products will be produced in future. At same time, 6–73% industrial waste manufacturing process magnets. The rare earth content (about 30 wt.%) these scraps is generally higher than that raw ore, and recovery elements from them helps to stabilize supply chain. addition, scrap contains about 70 wt.% iron, which currently unable utilized with high added value. If iron can recycled based on recycling elements, it expected realize full component reduce life cycle environmental load products. This paper summarizes properties, potential, existing technologies waste, principles, advantages, disadvantages various methods, such as direct reuse, pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, electrochemistry. Among them, electrochemical method was emphatically reviewed newly proposed method. On this basis, future development direction been prospected, research idea avoiding shortcomings methods through combined proposed. It low hazards, energy consumption, closed-loop are main goals achieved process.
